By: Mina M.
I started mall fishing in February with Eastridge being my first mall experience. Since then, I have been able to work all the malls (and I have soooo many stories) and I liken it to swimming in the ocean on a hot day in Santa Cruz California. My first steps into the water are not comfortable. My feet are shocked from the cold waves. But as I get used to it, I can go deeper and deeper in the water. Before, I know it, I’m swimming the waves and riding the waves and diving into the waves. I’m not feeling the cold at all. My apprehension has disappeared and I am fully enjoying God’s creation.

And so my fishing experience at Eastridge began as the unknown, cold waters of the million dollar bill with the million dollar question. I was thankful for my training yet prayerful that God would show up and minister. This very tall guy was flying by as I gave him a track and since he was friendly enough, I said “Come back if you have time and we can talk.” Well about half an hour later, he was standing right in front of me. “Hey you came back.” I said very light heartedly. “Let me ask you the million dollar question. What do you think happens after a person dies?”; and we were off talking for at least 15 minutes. He said a relative of his was very religious and so I guessed God had been working on him. He had a 1 year old son with him and his birth saved him from himself. As we went thru the Good Person test. He admitted in the end he was guilty but that God would send him to heaven cause God was good. I then explained the Just Judge concept that God can’t let criminals go and be good. He got it! Then I shared the good news of Jesus. His face changed in an amazing way from the beginning of the conversation to the end. I felt the Holy Spirit. I held out my hand and said salvation is a free gift and receiving Jesus is just the beginning of his journey. I prophesied over him but I can’t remember what I said. I’d love to share everything we talked about; subjects from a higher power to the exorcist…but I can’t recall it all. I gave him a Bible and am praying for him. His name is Christian…..for real….go figure? After he left, I got down on my knees (my son said, mom, what’s wrong?) trying hard to hold back tears. God was all over this guy. His presence was too much for me. Pray for him as you read this. I have since learned that I can give out a list of churches in the area. I have also made my own cards, for those that do not want to go to church but still have more questions. I want to be available and ready for whatever God has. Let’s continue to follow Him into the harvest.

A young woman came to my door for me to sign her petition for a cause I am totally against. I started telling her how wrong her cause was, but while I was attempting to show her the error of her way, I heard that still quiet voice speak to my heart, “Is this the most important thing you could be telling her right now?” I knew what the Lord was getting at, but I kept thinking, “Just a couple more points – besides I don’t have time to share the Gospel because I’ll be late for Bible study.” Yes, I really did tell God I didn’t have time to share His Word because I would be late to study it. However, in my defense, I did reject the asinine decision as soon as I thought it. I transitioned into the Gospel. She told me her name was Rosa, and we talked for a hour and a half. She was crying on and off throughout our conversation. She still wanted to talk, but I had a class to teach. She gave me a big hug, and I gave her a Gospel tract and DVD (I keep evangelistic tools in a basket by my front door to take as I leave and when solicitors come to the door). She yelled out to my boys, “You have a wonderful mom!” I am not adding that last part to praise myself; here is my point: I have heard that telling strangers the Gospel is “pounding them with the Gospel,” “harsh,” “in your face,” and “confrontational”. This tattooed woman was not only a stranger, but we stood in opposition to each other politically. The Gospel broke down walls between us; it is the “power unto salvation.”

Epilogue: My 17 year old takes the city bus to school. He told me after school, “Hey mom, you know that woman you were sharing the Gospel with this morning – Rosa – well, she was on the bus with me and she talked to me the whole way down to school. I wanted to talk about her petition (my son is very political) but all she wanted to talk about was Christianity. She really likes you. She said you were really brave to share your beliefs with her. I told her, ‘Yea, if she had the cure for cancer and you had cancer, it would be horrible if she didn’t share the cure with you.’ She agreed and said she was going to watch the DVD with her boyfriend.”

Once again, my point is not to compliment myself, but to encourage you to share the Gospel with family, friends, and STRANGERS. Rosa’s tears, hug, and kind words convince me that she didn’t feel “pounded on” but loved.

Take a brief look at what’s happening behind the scenes at the Living Waters / Way of the Master headquarters. This week, Eddie Roman leads a team to the local mall to share Christ with others. Malls and shopping centers are great places for evangelism. Public Access areas are offered by many malls in California. For information on the rules and regulations in other states, please contact your local mall’s administration office and/or government officials.

It was like a scene out of the TV show “Cheers.” They told us that Gina wasn’t there and recognized us as the Christians she’d talked to the week before. I was standing next to a woman seated at the bar and asked her if she went to church. She said she went sometimes but not as often as she should. Then I asked her if she thought she would be going to heaven, because that was the important thing. She said she wasn’t sure, so I began to explain the gospel, using the commandments first to bring the knowledge of sin. Using examples that we’d learned from the Way of the Master class, I was able to show her why Jesus came to die on the cross, to take the punishment for sin so now God could pardon anyone who will repent and trust in Christ. The man sitting next to her had been listening to our conversation. He preceded to tell me that he’d gone to church as a kid but strayed as an adult. He confessed that he had been in jail once but had always believed in God and wanted to be close to Him but never felt like he was. I talked about the need to be born again spiritually and encouraged Mario to read his Bible and seek God with all his heart and he will find Him. I had a CD of ‘Hells Best Kept Secret’ and ‘True and False Conversion’ in my purse so I gave it to him before we left and told him to put it in his car and listen to it often. I said that it addressed what we were talking about, people who think they are Christians but have never truly been saved. The other ladies were having spiritual conversations as well. As it was time for us to leave for our class I told Mario that I’d be praying for him and he shook my hand and thanked me. Then the 4 of us ‘church ladies’ waved good-bye to our new friends and left.

In looking back on this experience it was nothing like I would have expected it to be. Mind you, it was only 6 PM on a Friday night and still light outside, but the people we met at the bar were just average, ordinary folks who needed Jesus. It was a great place to go fishing. In fact, as I recall, Jesus came to seek and save not the righteous, but the sinners.

Our Saturday evening mall tract table was abuzz with activity and animated conversations. I noticed a young man with long, wavy hair standing by a large potted tree in the middle of the mall passageway, observing our interaction with a sort of shy curiosity. After a few minutes, I approached him and began a conversation. His English was heavily accented and halting. I learned that he had come from his native Bosnia only ten days earlier to begin work as an engineer at one of Silicon Valley’s many large electronics firms. Aldo was his name. He asked what we were doing at our table, and I explained that we were talking to people about God. He informed me that he did not believe in any god. I asked him where he found hope for his own life. He immediately explained that “globalism” was the hope of the world for the future. When I noted that it would be the same flawed humans that would manage the “global” system, he agreed that it wouldn’t afford much of an improvement.

I explained to Aldo that God would some day bring a Kingdom of universal and everlasting peace, and that He would judge who would be allowed to live there. I asked Aldo if he would like to find out God’s criteria for judging? He said. “Yes, I would.” Aldo’s wife, Mina, arrived, just in time to participate in the “good person test.” The transformation of these two young people during the ensuing conversation was astounding. The Spirit of the Lord came into their hungry hearts with great conviction, as they learned that the punishment for their sin had been paid by the same just and holy God to whom they owed that debt. They both agreed that the Gospel of Jesus Christ made complete sense. They allowed me to pray for them as newly born-again believers and they gladly accepted a Gospel of John and various other resources to read and study.

The fields are truly white and ripe for harvest, and the Lord knows how to bring each of his sheaves in! Glory be to His Name!

Last Friday, I joined a group to hand out tracts at Christmas in the Park.

I handed out LOTS of tracts! We stood near the crosswalk into the park, so there were a lot of people going either direction. There were a lot of families and a lot of young people—there was just a great mix of people in general.

Near where we were standing, there was a homeless man on a bike that had a trailer attached. He had two parrots, and he would offer to let people put the parrot on their shoulder. He told people, “We lost our home,” and he was looking for donations from people that took pictures with his parrots. I walked over and told him I didn’t have any money, but I did have a Santa million dollar tract. I gave it to him and took him through the good person test. (He let one of his parrots sit on my shoulder.) Other people came up, so I was polite and stopped talking so he could talk to others. I didn’t get an opportunity to finish sharing the entire gospel with him because he left, but I did pray for him. (I didn’t think to ask his name! I will remember next time.) After handing out tracts for about an hour and a half, we left.

I woke up the next morning feeling very glad that I had gone to hand out tracts. Even though I only talked to one person (and didn’t even share the whole gospel with him), I handed out LOTS of tracts! I know that some people will read the tracts and think about eternity. Some may even repent and surrender their lives to Christ!

You just never know what the Holy Spirit is going to do when you take that leap of faith and pass out Gospel tracts to the lost. Here I was with my 16 year old daughter and her newly born-again Christian friend at Christmas in the Park. A few weeks ago I shared God’s Law and Grace with my daughter’s friend and now here she was passing out tracts for the very first time with a heart of companion for the lost. WOW! What a joy to see these young teens stepping out in faith because they know the Lord and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

During the evening I had a great conversation with a young couple just talking about Christmas in the Park and what the true meaning of Christmas is really all about. The power of the Holy Spirit took over and away we went talking about spiritual matters. I brought up God’s Law that opens the heart to show sinfulness in the light. They admitted that they would be guilty before a Holy God and their demeanor changed to a sad look of hopelessness. I asked if they thought they’d go to heaven or hell and they both said hell. After explaining what hell was like and asking them if they knew what God did for them so they wouldn’t have to go to hell they shook their heads “No.” This was the moment to pour God’s grace out to them and explain why Jesus died and rose again, to pay the penalty for their sin so that if they would repent and turn to Christ they would be forgiven and receive eternal life. I wrapped up and asked “When do you think you might pray to God to receive His Son Jesus?” They didn’t waste any time and both said NOW! They prayed and received Jesus in their hearts and I welcomed them into the family of God. (Don Butler)
